AIR CANADA Cargo has acquired two factory-built B777 freighters which, as part of its airfreight expansion plans, will enter service in 2024, writes Thelma Etim.

The airline’s airfreight division introduced the first of two B767 converted freighters to its fleet in December 2021 and added the second in April of this year. In the second quarter of 2022, the carrier took delivery of two brand new B767 freighter aircraft, which are expected to enter service shortly, taking its B767 freighter fleet to seven units.

Jason Berry, vice-president of cargo, says North America’s only combination carrier continues to expand its freighter fleet as it continues to “strategically build our business and invest in our future.

“The ongoing growth and support from the forwarding community across our global network has been a key to fuelling our future,” he adds.

“Our careful and targeted investments in our freighter fleet and our self-handled cargo-only ground operations at our major hubs throughout Canada and internationally, together with staying laser-focused on our quality of service to the vast forwarding community we serve, are our key strategies as we continue to strengthen and grow.”

He says the investment in long-range widebody freighters, combined with its growing B767 freighter fleet and robust passenger network, will allow it to continue to bring to life “the most flexible and diverse cargo operation in the Americas.”

Ground handling operations are keeping pace too. “On the ground, we are continuing to make considerable investments in facilities, technology and our people to prepare us for the growth that lies ahead.”

The latest freighter business news follows the carrier revealing its second-quarter 2022 operating revenues of C$3.981billion, an almost five-fold increase from the same period in 2021.

Michael Rousseau, president and chief executive of Air Canada, points out: “From a financial perspective, we are pleased with our results as we generated $154million of earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation [EBITDA] in the quarter, a significant increase from a negative quarterly EBITDA of $656million a year ago, and operating revenues neared $4billion in the quarter, an improvement of about $3.1billion from the second quarter of 2021.”
